S.Africa rand recovers vs dollar

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa’s rand recovered some ground against the dollar on Thursday after a battering overnight that took it to new 6-1/2 year lows, but generally remains on the backfoot as global economic worries hit markets.

At 0637 GMT the rand traded 2.08 percent firmer at 11.32 against the greenback, compared with Wednesday’s close at 11.56 in New York. The local currency went as low as 11.88 against the dollar overnight, its weakest level since March 2002, Reuters data shows.

The rand’s latest gains were due to some profit taking after its heavy losses overnight and in Asian trade earlier on Thursday, a Johannesburg trader said.

“But it still looks quite horrible. There’s lack of liquidity, especially during New York trade, although it seems as though during local (Johannesburg) time we have two-way flows,” the trader said.

“All emerging market currencies are under immense pressure. To be honest it can go any way, but we’re still of the view that there could be some more rand weakening.”

Government bonds were also firmer, and yields fell in turn. The benchmark 2015 bond yield dropped 6.5 basis points to 9.89 percent, while that for the 2036 note was down 7 basis points at 9.215 percent.

Mechanism Of Action

NSAIDs work by suppressing the production of fatty acids called prostaglandins that cause inflammation and pain. They do this by blocking the action of an enzyme, cyclooxygenase (COX). This enzyme is responsible for converting precursor acids into prostaglandins.

In the periphery NSAIDs work by decreasing the sensitivity of the nociceptor to painful stimuli induced by heat, trauma, or inflammation. Differences Between NSAIDs

The major NSAIDs of potency comparable to opioids are diclofenac and ketorolac. Moderate postoperative pain, for example, may be managed using these agents. The overall analgesic effect of 30 mg of ketorolac is equivalent to that of 6 to 12 mg of morphine. Efficacy has been demonstrated for postsurgical pain including oral, orthopedic, gynecologic, and abdominal procedures. Efficacy for acute musculoskeletal pain has also been shown. Ketorolac causes ulcers more frequently than any other NSAID and is, therefore, not used for more than five days.

Naproxen provides effective relief in acute traumatic injury and for acute pain associated with migraine, tension headache, postoperative pain, postpartum pain, pain consequent to various gynecologic procedures, and the pain of dysmenorrhea.

New software is enabling graziers to track their animals with their mobile phone.

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin says “quick-thumbed livestock owners” can now exchange National Livestock Identification Scheme information with the NLIS database, following the launch of the new mobile phone application software.

“This new software, ‘NLIS Express’, can be easily loaded onto compatible mobile phones - providing a new way to quickly capture and transfer NLIS data,” Mr Mulherin said.

“It is going to be very useful to a lot of sectors within the livestock industry.”

Biosecurity Queensland Principal Project Officer Michael Lancaster said training would be provided to graziers in coming months.

“The training will be available to anyone who uses the NLIS database, but we also see it being of particular interest to agents,” he said.

Agent Dan Sullivan, from Sullivan Livestock in Gympie, is one of the first people in Queensland to use the new software.

Mr Sullivan said he uses NLIS Express to transfer data directly to the database on behalf of clients.

“With NLIS Express I can provide a transfer service to our clients - often while I’m still at their property,” he said.

“Often, I’ll know if the transfer has been completed before I leave the property and this has removed the need to come back to the office, freeing up my time to continue on with other business,” Mr Sullivan said.

Consider that the US Treasury just put us all on the hook for several trillion dollars’ worth of liabilities with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The new service, named “comes with music”, allows people owning a special device to download unlimited music for free through their mobile telephone or computer for up to 18 months â€" after which they can also keep the music.

“It’s about changing the way we consume music,” said Tero Ojanpero, executive vice president and head of entertainment and communities business at Nokia, the world’s leading mobile phone maker.

Britain will be first to offer the service through the Carphone Warehouse dealer. It will be initially available on 5310 Xpress Music phones, which cost 129.95 pounds, but other phones will then be added.

The service will then be rolled out to ten other countries including France, Sweden, Spain and Singapore where the online Nokia Music Store is available.

The store in Nokia’s answer to the iTunes store from Apple, and it has signed deals with Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI, Warner and a host of independent labels to give customers a wide range of music to choose from.

Sony-Ericsson said Wednesday that it would also be launching an unlimited music download service by the end of the year, but it would be part of a mobile phone package, PlayNowTM, and customers could only keep up to 300 songs.

In another challenge to Apple, Nokia said it would launch its first touch-screen phone in Taiwan, Spain, Russia, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates later this year, and France and Britain in 2009.

Al! though the parent company needed an billion loan from the government to stay afloat its state regulated U.S. insurance subsidiaries have always been well capitalized and were in no danger of not being able to pay their claims according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The company got in trouble mainly by buying and guaranteeing mortgages and mortgage securities in other subsidiaries. The company plans to repay the government loan by selling assets which means your AIG policy could be sold to another company. AIG sells virtually every type of insurance including auto home life and health under names such as American General st Century and the Variable Annuity Life Insurance Co. known as Valic . What about other companies It s very hard to tell whether other major insurance companies have similar exposure to mortgage debt and could be in trouble. To date no other major insurers have emerged in the cavalcade of troubled financial firms caught up in the ongoing global credit crisis. But it s good to know what happens when in! surers go under. If any regulated insurer could not pay its claims the regulator in the company s home state usually the state insurance commissioner would start a process known as rehabilitation. If rehab fails the company is liquidated and claims would be paid up to a certain limit by a guaranty agency in each policyholder s state. This money comes from companies still doing business in each state. The limits vary somewhat by state but in California they are for property casualty insurance for health policies in life insurance death benefits in cash surrender value on life insurance and on the present value of annuity benefits. There is no limit on workers comp. If a property casualty company fails its policies are usually canceled and the customer can go out and get a new one from another company. The guaranty covers claims that have already arisen but have not been paid. In the case of life or annuity policies state regulators usually try to transfer in force policies t! o a new company. They also transfer the failed company s assets and enough money from the guaranty fund to make sure the new company can pay the failed company s claims at least up to the guaranty agency limits. Normally there are enough assets in the failed company that the new company will take it over with the same benefits and the same premium says Pete Gallanis director of the National Organization of Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Associations. For AIG customers its subsidiaries are neither in rehab nor liquidation. Some will probably be sold to other companies which will take over the policies. The new companies can t change policies terms. However they can raise premiums or fees or make other changes to the extent allowed in the original contract. Customers can stay with the new companies or cancel their policies. In the case of home auto and term life insurance it s fairly easy to switch companies although people who had a level term policy might pay higher premiums if they are older or in worse health than when they took it out. ! Replacing a whole or universal life policy is harder. They are very complicated and consumers might pay surrender charges when they cancel a policy and hefty sales commissions which are often hidden when they buy a new one. Their costs also might go up if they are older or sicker. It won t be long before agents who make commissions on every sale start urging AIG customers to switch policies. You re going to have agents who will take advantage of the situation says Peter Katt a fee only life insurance adviser. In the past when a company has failed been recapitalized or sold pricing has gotten worse for consumers he says. But he s not sure if that will happen with AIG. Robert Hunter director of insurance with the Consumer Federation of America says I don t think AIG is a good company for consumers. Maybe if they get sold policyholders will be better off. But you can t conclude that just because a company is highly rated it s OK Witt warns. The usual diversification logic that investors use for their portfolios should also be applied to insurance. If you have a monster death benefit a multimillion dollar policy it would be prudent to have that coverage across several companies rather than just one he says.
