PPG still looking to sell auto glass business Pittsburgh PostGazette

PPG Industries has fielded inquiries from potential buyers for its automotive glass business but has yet to enter negotiations to sell the operations which include PPG s historic glass plant in Creighton PPG s chairman said yesterday. PPG had hoped to divest the division last year as part of its ongoing strategy to focus on paints and specialty products rather than its traditional businesses of glass and chemicals. But a California investment group Platinum Equity that had a deal to buy the business for million pulled out of a sales agreement in December claiming that PPG misrepresented the financial health of the unit. After PPG s annual meeting of shareholders yesterday in David L. Lawrence Convention Center Downtown Chairman Charles Bunch told reporters that prospective U.S. and international buyers contacted the company when the Platinum deal fell through but we are not in any active negotiations to sell the division which has plus employees in the United States and Cana! da. Mr. Bunch told shareholders that the company intended to sell the business this year and was taking steps to cut its overhead and labor costs while it looks for a buyer. He later said job cuts at the glass operations were being accomplished through attrition. The Creighton facility which was PPG s first manufacturing plant when the company was founded in is about miles northeast of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River and employs about . Other regional plants are in Meadville Crawford County and Tipton Blair County. Mr. Bunch reiterated to shareholders yesterday that PPG s vision for growth was focused on its coatings optical products and growth in emerging global regions such as Asia and Latin America. The company s billion acquisition of a Dutch paints company SigmaKalon Group completed in January was truly a transformational step in PPG s efforts to reach those goals he said. SigmaKalon should boost PPG s coatings sales by percent this year and boost the proportion of c! oatings and specialty products in the company s total portfolio from percent to percent in two years Mr. Bunch said. He expects fewer than percent of revenues this year to be generated by sales in the United States and Canada down from percent in . Costs to acquire SigmaKalon pushed first quarter earnings below year ago levels. First quarter net income fell to million or cents per share down from million or . per share a year ago. PPG took a one time after tax charge of million related to the SigmaKalon deal. Sales for the quarter jumped by percent to . billion from . billion in the first quarter of . Adjusted net income excluding special items was . per share down from . per share a year ago. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial projected earnings of . per share. Analysts estimates typically exclude special items. PPG s shares closed at . down . . Joyce Gannon can be reached at jgannonpost gazette.com or . Kitsap Humane Society horses ready for new homes Kitsap Humane Society horses ready for new homes Central Kitsap Reporter

Kitsap Humane Society horses ready for new homes Kitsap Humane Society horses ready for new homes Jesse Beals staff photo Kitsap Humane Society volunteer Destinie Beninger gives treats to two of the seven horses currently housed at the animal shelter. The nine horses two are receiving specialized care elsewhere were seized from a South Kitsap man in January and are currently up for adoption. By RACHEL BRANT Staff writer By RACHEL BRANT Staff writer Apr For the past three months Kitsap Humane Society staff and volunteers dedicated long hours to feeding and caring for nine malnourished horses. Now the volunteers are hoping it s time to say goodbye to the thoroughbreds and Arab mixes. The nine horses have recuperated nicely and the staff at the humane society is hoping to find the animals loving homes. Everybody recovered way way faster than I expected said Kitsap Animal Control Humane Officer Jody Rosenblad. The animals were seized by Kitsap Animal Control in early January fro! m a South Kitsap man who did not properly care for them. All of the animals were underfed and a county judge said the man cannot have the animals back. One horse is blind in one eye and the oldest mare had sores on her back from horse blankets being left on for prolonged periods of time. The horses are now friendly with people and some are reportedly rideable but they all still need extra attention and care according to Rosenblad and Kitsap Humane Society Development Manager Dana Lerma. They re all doing really really well Lerma said. They re finally at a point now where they can stand to have extra veterinary care done. The horses range in age from with most between the ages of and . The two youngest stallions need to be castrated before they leave the animal shelter Rosenblad said which is a costly procedure. All of the horses need their teeth floated or smoothed and contoured with a file and followup hoof work. This is a tremendous strain on what little resources we do h! ave Rosenblad said. Lerma said the volunteers who have stepped up to care for the animals for the past three months saved the day. The volunteers who have been here from day one they have literally saved the day she said. They continue to be here day in and day out three times a day. As for the South Kitsap man he is charged with nine counts of second degree animal cruelty. If he does not accept the plea deal he was offered he will be charged with nine counts of first degree animal cruelty a Class C felony. You can t convince this guy he can t keep these horses Rosenblad said. He thinks he knows everything but he really knows nothing. The humane society will keep the horses until they are all adopted to loving homes or they find rescue facilities that will take the animals. We only have so much space here and we can t keep them here for the rest of their natural lives Lerma said. People interested in adopting a horse can schedule an appointment to view the animals between and p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Contact the humane society to set u! p an appointment at ext. . Interested persons will fill out applications and Rosenblad will conduct site inspections if applications are approved. The horses will go to qualified homes for a donation. All donations received will be used to help recover some of the expense for the horses care while at the Kitsap Humane Society. Lerma said the humane society also may allow the animals to go to foster homes provided the foster parents will provide adequate care for them. The shelter is still searching for volunteers to care for the horses until they leave the facility. The shelter also needs various horse supplies including waterproof blankets and fly repellent sprays as well as cash donations for the horses medical procedures. Housing Crash and Economics

Personal Logs of Nikolas Walker Political Social explinations. IN A BOX Housing Crash andEconomics Gordon Brown says the slump in the UK housing market is containable after the sharpest monthly decline in prices since the early s. BBC News Erm why is he trying to contain this horrible and so disgusting house price fall ahem ahem I ll translate what is being done and said through out the market now for you all to read. The house prices of the United Kingdom have been on the rise since the late s Take my house for example was bought for just over in July of In July of years later the house is almost six times that amount at and until around this was fine. Then at the turn of the millennium everything went abit nuts and the average house price went from a measly so the new labour government put it to a massive your telling me that s not a lot right now That s three times the amount in less that three years. It is now almost impossible for the average couple or family to even th! ink of getting a home the right size for them because of this huge rise in house prices The family home of four is now around and that s got to be funded by two people man and women who haven t had their wage increase as inflation has gone up. Ill get to this later isn t it a little bit of a piss take that the prices are so incredibly high After all only countries with hyper inflated economies have seen this Ahh and now we get to the wage problem The house price rise was due primarily to a huge economic inflation globally in the mid s through the late s and has continued ever since then pretty much controversially the average wage has not followed suit While in years since my birth the national minimum wage has only risen by say two maybe three pounds while everything else on the high street has gone up by almost a thousand times that Seems abit stupid that while everything else rises in price no ones wages have gone that way unlike the CEO s and MP and the general elitists! of our once proud nation huh What im saying is that the house market slump is welcomed all over the country by the working and middle class as the proverbial first rung on the housing ladder for their children or themselves for that matter However it does concern some people because if the prices fall they will have taken out these HUGE mortgages and then will be paying them back for a house worth six times less that kick in the butt huh But there is an easy way to combat that Government issued bonds to pay back the mortgage that will actually be snapped to the company they are owed too no interest and none of that damn awful VAT Would it be so bad if the market slumped I think not We do all know why the overall slump has come though right Gordon Brown borrowed billions and billions of pounds worth of money during the great boom in the late s and early mid s and now the taxpayer and the entire country is suffering due to his short sightedness and arrogance that it would go on forever The only thing im worried about is basically a new great de! pression coming along it does seem probable but not to the extent that the one destroyed the world this time we ve got fail safes right . Right But lets not forget that while all this is going on the MP s WILL be consolidating their postions in government and in their own little home grown constituencies Basically they re gonna be sitting there using your cash to pay for what they want by Walker on April . You may recall about a week ago when we ran a story about a Humane Society that s been having trouble stocking the shelves of their food pantry. Since we ran our story last week the news has been good for the Berkshire Humane Society. They ve had an increase in food donations for the animals there. Things looking up for Berkshire Humane Society You may recall about a week ago when we ran a story on a Humane Society that s been having trouble stocking the shelves of their food pantry. Our Ryan Burgess has an update on how they re doing. The shelter said the shelves of their food pantry were almost completely empty about two weeks ago. They rely on public pet food donations not just to feed the animals staying there but also for pet owners who can t afford to buy food on their own. But now they say the shelves are pretty well stocked. There s enough food to continue to supply pet owners in need with a day supply for their animals. Shelter officials have blamed a weakening econ! omy for the decrease in donations. They said that although their shelves do look pretty full more donations are always needed. It was Germans who invented the a! spirin the airship the printing press and the diesel engine. But Germany has surely never produced anything quite as weird as the automated restaurant. I say restaurant but it actually looks more like a rollercoaster with long metal tracks criss crossing the dining area. The tracks run all the way from the kitchen high up in the roof down to the tables twisting and turning as they go. And down the tracks in little pots with wheels fixed to the bottom speeds food. Supersonic sausages high pace pancakes and wine bottles whizzing down to the customers tables with the help of good old gravity. One pot is spiralling down so fast it looks like an Olympic bobsleigh but it s only Bratwurst . I wanted to come up with a complete new restaurant system Michael Mack restaurant owner What s more at the s Baggers restaurant in Nuremberg you don t need waiters to order food. Customers use touch screen TVs to browse the menu and choose their meal. You can even use the computers to send e ma! ils and text messages while you wait for the food to be cooked. But all this may not appeal to those who like traditional waiter service. Meals on wheels Up in the kitchen it is man not machine that makes the food. They haven t found a way of automating the chef just yet. Everything is prepared from fresh. When it is ready the meal is put in a pot and given a sticker and a colour to match the customer s seat. Then it is put on the rails and despatched downhill to the correct table. Manna from heaven German style. The restaurant is the brainchild of local businessman Michael Mack. I wanted to come up with a complete new restaurant system Michael tells me one that would be more efficient and more comfortable . Replacing waiters with helter skelters and computers is fun for the customers. It also makes financial sense for the restaurant. A plate of food whizzes down from the kitchen You can save labour costs explains restaurant spokesperson Kyra Mueller Siecheneder. You don t need the waiters to run to the customers take the orders run to the kit! chen and back to the guests. The restaurant has not completely done away with the human touch. There are still some staff on hand to explain to rather bemused customers how to use the technology. But what do the punters here think Do Germans really have the appetite for automated mealtimes It s another art for eating. I like it one man raves. It s more for young people than old people a woman tells me. My mother was here yesterday and she needs my son s help to order. Watching all this food raining down on the restaurant makes me ravenous. I decide that it is my turn to test the system. I order steak and salad on the computer and wait for it to appear. A few minutes later a pot glides down to my table with my fast food and it is delicious. As I finish the meal and prepare to leave one final thought crosses my mind. An automated meal doesn t only save the restaurant money but the customer too. After all in a restaurant without waiters there is no need to leave a tip. Stories Too Many Hysterectomies CBS In collaboration with Business Week CBS News has been investigating breakthroughs in the way patients undergo surgery. One involves an operation that one third of women undergo by the time they re . It can lead to weeks of painful recovery. But it turns out that kind of discomfort and recuperation time can be significantly decreased CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook reports. Dr. Lori Warren is a surgeon who has a startling diagnosis for women. She thinks hundreds of thousands of them are getting the wrong operation every year. I m outraged that doctors are still in my mind doing these archaic surgeries on people we re opening them up unnecessarily Warren said. The surger! y she s upset about may be archaic but it s very common. Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. About of them are done every year in this country. Most are recommended because of pain and bleeding from fibroids. If patients really know that they have options when it comes to hysterectomy we will start seeing some of the changes that I feel need to happen Warren said. What s happening now is that the vast majority about percent are done the old fashioned way with a large surgical incision lots of pain and a six to eight week recovery. I just think we need to open less people up Warren said. Warren is one of relatively few surgeons who perform hysterectomy with a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique. Like all laparoscopic procedures a camera is inserted through a tiny incision to see into the abdomen two other small incisions are made so that tools can be inserted to perform the surgery. It s all over in about an hour and patients are usually home within a d! ay and back to normal within a week or two. Does it still amaze you after all these years LaPook asked. Oh yeah I m amazed by what we can do and what s most amazing to me is how well the patient does she said. Read more from our partner in investigating this topic Business Week by clicking here . Becky Ruppert had a hysterectomy just before LaPook talked with her literally. And right away she wanted to go home. LaPook said So about five hours ago you had your uterus out and how do feel now I feel great Ruppert said. I have no pain. Literally no pain. What frustrates Warren is that only about percent of hysterectomies are done this way. You would think in today s age and the way that we ve improved in so many areas of medicine women would begin questioning this but we re finding that they re not said Beth Cahill of the National Womens Health Resource Center. About percent of all gall bladder surgeries are done laparoscopically so why not hysterectomy Women are not seeking second opinions they are going to the gynecologist that delivered their b! abies because they have that trust in them she said. It makes my blood boil she says. It does. I m outraged about it and that s what fires my passion to get the word out. And to get the word out she invites doctors to come to Baptist Hospital East in Louisville and learn the procedure. What would you want for your wife or your mom or your sister or your best friend Warren said. You would want them to have the least invasive procedure possible. I feel like a bunch of nothing. I've more or less been doing nothing to speak of. I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. I haven't gotten much done recentl! y, but I guess it doesn't bother me. More or less nothing seems worth bothering with, but such is life. Whatever.
