TMobile dumps Google for Yahoo Macworldcom via Yahoo News
Primary Navigation Home U.S. Business World Entertainment Sports Tech Politics Elections Science Health Most Popular Secondary Navigation Tech Video Internet Gadgets Digital A V Security Apple Macintosh Linux Open Source Video Games Markets Search All News Yahoo News Only News Photos Video Audio Advanced T Mobile dumps Google for Yahoo Nancy Gohring Wed Feb AM ET T Mobile announced on Tuesday that it will soon begin using Yahoo as its preferred mobile search provider in Europe ending the operator s existing relationship with Google for mobile search. The move was seen by many as a minor coup for Yahoo which is competing with Google and Microsoft to win the loyalty of a growing number of mobile Internet users. Others noted that mobile search is in its infancy and said the field is still wide open. When T Mobile signed its original deal with Google it made headlines as one of the earliest partnerships between a mobile operator and a search provider. Well done Yahoo for knockin! g Google off the Web n Walk home page wrote John Delaney an analyst for Ovum commenting on the announcement. Web n Walk is T Mobile s mobile Internet offering. Beginning in March T Mobile customers in European countries will see Yahoo s mobile oneSearch by default on their phones. OneSearch is designed to make it easy for mobile users to get relevant search results and navigate through different categories within search results. The companies plan to offer other Yahoo services to T Mobile customers including Flickr Messenger Mail Weather and Finance. Yahoo now counts operators around the world as oneSearch customers. The deal appears to mark a strategy change at T Mobile. When the operator launched Web n Walk the service was designed to mimic the Web by minimizing T Mobile branded services and prominently offering Google Delaney said. Since then it has evolved to add more T Mobile services. It s not clear yet which strategy end users prefer. The risk is that T Mobile will d! iscover that its users really preferred it when T Mobile gave them access to the Web and then got out of their way Delaney said. While the T Mobile Yahoo deal is a blow to Google the search giant had a significant mobile win of its own this week. Nokia announced on Tuesday that it will add Google search in addition to its own search offering on select phones. Nokia plans to extend the offering to more phones in the future. Nokia has begun offering an increasing number of services such as location based maps and social networking services which could compete with offerings from operators. Nokia is walking a bit of a fine line because they re definitely moving into what some consider carrier territory said Mike Wolf an analyst at ABI Research. So far the market for branded search services on mobile phones like those from Yahoo and Google is still wide open he said. The search providers are increasingly interested in mobile because there is strong growth in mobile Internet usage he said. The iPhone is contributing to that as a device that aims to! make the mobile Internet as similar as possible to the PC based Internet. Services from Yahoo and Google also compete with those that are branded by the operator. Companies like Medio specialize in offering technology to operators for branded search services. Operators in the U.S. have been more likely to use the self branded option rather than partner with one of the online brands. AT T however is one notable exception it uses Yahoo s oneSearch. Success in the mobile Internet is important enough that Wolf believes that Yahoo s track record in the mobile market was a factor in Microsoft s decision to try to buy the search provider. Mobile is probably at least a consideration in the acquisition attempt he said. Try Brown Dinnerware this Valentine
Try Brown Dinnerware this Valentine Even more than red for me chocolate is the most associate word to Valentine s Day. That is how I got the idea to set up a brown tablescape. And I forced myself to find beautiful brown dinnerware. Traditional look I want to find something that is stylish and will make a statement. The traditional hand painted Ludovica dinnerware is an exclusivity of Horchow. The style testifies the Italian charms. The beauty of the set is enhanced by the Italian pewter chargers. The Bavaria model from the Italian brand MEPRA is a classic flatware with just the right amount of decorative elements. If you prefer something a little bit more ornate the Medici Flatware displayed on the Ludovica saucer looks amazing. The cylindrical beautifully detailed pewter handles make a statement. Contemporary look Since I selected recipes by David Rocca a more hip dinnerware set seems right. The Cocoa Blossom by Mikasa has all the qualities I was looking for. The color sche! me appeals to men. The lush blooms feel young yet refined. And I like the variations in the patterns between the various plates bowls and serve ware. The unique handles shaped like freshly cut stems of Frond by Namb complements the concept behind Cocoa Blossom. Slide a place card into the grooves on top of these Indian style napkin holders for a clever stylish flair. Waterford kept the ornamentation simple enough so you can dress up any modern casual dinnerware set with these napkin holders placecard holders. Chocolate recipes for Valentine s Day It is fashionable to cook an entire meal with chocolate. Although I think it would be a chocolate overload. So what I suggest is to serve chocolate at the start and the end of the meal. And swing other flavors for the entr e. I suggested two recipes from the adorable David Rocca because his recipes are easy to prepare and delicious. If you never try meat with chocolate before serve Spezzatino Di Manzo Al Cioccolato as a warm appeti! zer. The Chocolate Eggplant is supposed to be a classic snack in Italy.. Kids go nuts about it. If you want to be less adventurous simply make homemade crepes topped with Nutella. Sourcing Buy online Ludovica Dinnerware at Horchow price . Canadiansapos sports participation plummets in 2005
Barely three out of Canadians aged and over participated regularly in at least one sport in says a new Statistics Canada report. That s a dramatic decline from the early s when the proportion was closer to one half. The report estimates that . million people or about per cent of the adult population participated in some form of sport. That s down from . million or per cent in and . million or per cent in . The decline was widespread cutting across all age groups education levels income brackets both sexes and almost all provinces. Teenagers aged to had the highest participation rate but that declined to per cent in from per cent in . The report notes however that the downward sports trend does not necessarily mean Canadians do not exercise. It says many participate regularly in exercise programs or classes while others enjoy jogging gardening or other solo activities. And while active participation declined the study found indirect involvement in sports on a voluntary basis ! actually increased. As well an estimated . million adults were involved in amateur sports as spectators a . per cent increase from . Golf replaced ice hockey as the most popular sport in Canada in . Almost . million adult Canadians were golfers in three quarters of them men. Ice hockey drew . million participants. Other sports in order of popularity Swimming Soccer Basketball Baseball Volleyball Higher income higher participation The higher the level of education and household income the more likely a person was to participate actively in sport the report found. In per cent of Canadians aged and over with a high school diploma or less participated in sport. This compares with per cent for those with a post secondary diploma and per cent for those with a university degree. Sport participation increases as household income grows. In families with household incomes of and over were twice as likely to participate in sport as those with household incomes of less than . Household! income was also a major determinant for children. In only per cent of children from households with incomes of less than were active in sport as opposed to per cent of those from households with incomes of over . The report found that one of the many factors in declining participation in sports is Canada s aging population. In people aged and over represented per cent of the adult population about per cent of them participated in sports. By per cent of Canadians were in this age group and their participation rate was down to per cent. Thus society is aging and becoming less active the report concludes. Only per cent of Canadians aged and over participated in sports well below the proportion of per cent in . Among older non active Canadians aged and over per cent indicated that age was the biggest factor. Almost a quarter of them reported health conditions as the most important reason while another quarter of this group cited lack of interest in sport. Comments are now closed for this story T Roy Way too expensive especially with the increases! in fees etc. You have to be rich to have kids involved in sports these days. And that so called sports credit offered by the current federal government was just another ploy. It s useless that s if you can even get it. Another vote buying scheme like the green car feebate that hasn t materialized. RB Hey Man.what do you expect .Novice prices in Lakeshore Hockey in the West Island of Montreal are . Then you have a budget of between extra And I ve heard a rumour of . Add in the price for Hockey equipment and you ll find that not too many people can afford to participate. Well Duh I could pay for a video game that will last hours for a long time buy junk food as a treat. Cost of sports healthier foods and lack of physical activity in schools has been reported for years as a trend and this now surprises people. J F Ottawa To T Roy and RB An XBOX is plus the games plus the accessories that come with it. Then comes the cell phone with all the gadgets and THAT monthly fee. What I! m getting at is that parents are giving in way too easily to what the kids are asking for and don t have the proper priorities for them. I happen to know a few families who aren t wealthy at all low income and have all their kids in various sports. It s all about priorities. I have a two year old son and a two month old son. Instead of video games and digital cameras I ll buy them a pair of skates and a hockey stick. Doug It is very expensive in the city.I guess rural folks have more outdoor opportunities. Me I put in a lot more hours at work to pay my rising property taxes. And yea my drivers licence cost me over plus for the medical. And even if I can afford the gas a fishing licence is now close to and the fees at government campsites are beyond rational. Sports participation is down.It s no wonder to me.If my pay went up nearly as fast as some of these costs I d love to play.Even when one government cuts your taxes another level just finds more imaginative ways to tax it back.I m afraid we have much work to do on this economy before most of! us have much time to play. Socialism is killing us Doesn t suprise me at all with the increasing fees increasing taxes by municipalities who take care of the sports sites. Plus lazy parents who d rather plop their children in front of a tv or a computer because they don t want to take care of their kids. No suprise at all. David The cost is not what makes it hard for my family. It is the fact Canada has become such an urban country. In Calgary to get ice time for my kids to practice hockey we have to drive to rural communities such as Black Diamond High River at Saturday mornings because there is so few rinks population here. It is worth it though my boys love it with a passion It just means early bedtime for me on Friday nights In the spring summer soccer rules all and is affordable. Kerri Sport is for kids and exercising is for adults. My husband and I are in our late s. It s much easier for us to hit the gym than it is to join a volleyball league etc. The local Volleyba! ll league plays all thier games in the evening after the important players the kids are done with the court. My husband plays rec hockey. His games are at or at night. Most people can t fit that type of sport into their lives. Much easier to get to to the gym or go out jogging at in the evening or in the morning. David in NL Instead of my boys playing hockey which would run in excess of per season my boys have chosen to take up curling. It is not as physically demanding as hockey but is much less expensive and still gives them the exercise they need. There are many alternatives to hockey in the winter. Hockey is quickly becoming the sport of the well to do. J I would love to enroll my daughters in some sort of sport but the monthly fees x or the costs of equipment x are just too prohibitive. It s become so only the elite can afford to participate which means the majority of us aren t invited. Sandra Rogerson We are in our late s and are very active. In the summer we do many km. of cycling every week walking camping and an occasional golf game. ! In the winter we do cross country skiing bowling walking and use our treadmill regularly. Some of these activities are organized with a group and all cost very little. More Canadians need to find less costly ways to exercise. Weekend Warrior I think the point of the article was to show that older Canadians aren t playing organized sports. Cost doesn t need to be a barrier however and being in an urban area is no excuse. I live in Calgary one of the most expensive cities. I play rec level ultimate frisbee and soccer. Total cost to me for months in the summer is for both sports combined. Plus a pair of cleats every years for . Most people can afford that. And sport and social clubs offer lots of different sports for about the same price. It only takes hours a week including travel time to play a single sport. We can t all afford hockey but there are alternatives. Gym Rat I ve been heavily involved in sports in Ontario since I can remember. I love to be active and I thrive off! the energy of sport. Not everyone enjoys playing or running around but the numbers are staggering Participation has dropped significantly while in contrast spectating has risen. What is this telling us People would rather watch sports rather than play them. There is a growing trend towards abstaining from activity in favor of the gratification of watching on Television. I encourage all armchair athletes to look into local community programs and participate in some healthy inexpensive and fun activities. Keep our sports alive. Patrick Sudbury Hearst Ontario Sure cost are high and municipalities don t spend as much as they should on infrastructure but everyone is to blame here. I am and when I grew in Northern Ontario we use to play hockey in the street till p.m. now most cities have banned or by law against playing in the street so we go to the rink pay the fee. I also understand that in large urban areas you can t enjoy what we had in Northern Ontario because of traffic volumes. But Northern Ontario didn t have all the sports facilities that ! Southern Ontario enjoys because of population. Also I blame insurance. Everything and anything you do these days you have to have insurance. You want to play a certain sports you have to have insurance you want to volunteer time to coach a certain team you have to take a course and have to be insured in case you get sued. In my days we just needed an adult to supervise and we could play nobody needed insurance or would get sued because you were benched or had less playing time than the other kid. No coach needed to be train or go to school just to coach. Now they expect coach to be trained to be able to train the next Olympian or the next Wayne Gretzky. Did Walter ever taken a class to coach Government funding is another big issue. While government spends more and more money on health care to fix the problem they should spend more on sports and have admission or registration fee reduced or free to encourage parents to subscribe theirs kids to play and maybe they would not h! ave to spend as much on healthcare prevent the obesity prevent the health problem before it occurs and give more life to communities. Finally parents have to be blame because they expect too much of there kids they expect them to be the next Olympian or professional athlete and will forget that the first lesson is to have fun keep active too much pressure on kids to perform and most will quit because they are told or believe they are not good enough. Sure I would like to become an athlete but I sure enjoyed my younger years playing hockey or which other sports that was offered in my community. I wasn t sitting in front of TV as much as kids now and that s only years ago. Hope my comment helps other to reflect on what is our society of today. Shawn Second hand equipment programs that subsidize fees saving a little bit of money throughout the year if parents are truly passionate about their kids being involved in sports it can be done. High fees is just another excuse for lazy parents. Cara B It is not just the money although it is steep as a si! ngle parent to fork out fees of each for ringette I don t like . Investigate into some of our Olympians for their financial problems and how they were overcome definitely n! ot with help from the governments. John I Who has time for sports when your time is used up working or jobs just to eat and make your bills So I get my exercise at the job site. Allan Sports are on the decline yet politicians will still find money for mega games that regular people can t afford to attend and kids can t afford to play. We also seem to have killed the joy of sport. Everything now is so bloody regulated and organized. It s not enough to be good and have fun you re pushed towards making it a career.
